Interview w/ Kaylani Cream

Today I bring to you all my interview with the Adult Film Star Kaylani Cream.  The story of how it happen is a strange yet funny story.  We follow each other on twitter.  A few @replies and DMs we have the final product which I present to you all.

1.  Brief intro. . .Who us Kaylani Cream:

Who I am is very complex. Nerd, pornstar, Psychologist, sexologist . . .

2.  What got you started in the industry?

Being a swinger, sexual, and business minded, I felt porn was a good fit for my personality! My initial intro to the industry was in 2003 with a guy named Greg who ran a local website, bayareabooty.com.  It was supposed to be just sexy pics, which we took outside at a beach. I got so comfortable with him, I took some nude pics at the beach.  Shortly thereafter I agreed to do full x-rated pics indoors for his site. It was fun!

3) Where do you think you would be if you didn’t get into the industry?

My experience in the industry is different from most porn stars.  While I was making videos, I was also earning my MS degree from UD Berkeley, one of the most respected universities in the country.  Being in the industry hasn’t kept me from doing anything I otherwise choose to do. I worked for the university research center during my last year and for a year after I graduated.  Since then I have continued to make videos, work as a volunteer in my local community (putting my education to use) and even returned to work as a financial analyst for a defense contractor.  I live a very interesting double life J

4) What are some of the pros & cons of being in the industry?
Pros: Not many, lol.  Okay, but seriously, the major pro is the money.  Without a college degree, minimum wage in California is something like $8/hour.  With a graduate degree and 5+ years work experiences, someone with a degree in social science will be lucky to earn $30/hour.  Porn – pretty much $500+ per hour, depending on the type of scene.  The pay is per scene, not per hour, but I’m calculating based on the time it takes to stand around and take pics, do a scene, more pics then leave (2-3 hours work).

Another pro is the attention. Going somewhere and people want your autograph or to take a picture with you can be fun.  I’m not so big on that part.  There are hot girls at the local club worth taking a photo with *smile*.  I think most people in the entertainment industry don’t deserve the attention we get.  We’re working no where as hard as those spending their hard earned money to be entertained by our work.

5) Now I see you are apart of the Twitter community, I’ve noticed a few of your ’sexual updates’. Are you really like that? Or just playing into how people think you would act?

One thing that is important to me is to be real, to be me. What I post is really how I am.  That’s why my yahoo group folks have learned that I don’t post “Oh baby, you make me so hot” messages. How ridiculous! Why would I want cyber-sex? I want REAL sex, ha ha ha.  But it is a legitimate question as I’m sure most performers are tweeting their persona not their real personality. I know I wouldn’t like that so I don’t do it.  I am in truth a silly, horny, nerdy, academic, sports fan, anime fan, etc.  I don’t post anything that isn’t my real thought process.

6) How do you like it off set? What turns you on/off?
Offset – I like a lot of things. When I’m at a swinger party, I like to watch. I’m not likely to participate. My philosophy is, I can always get dick so I’d rather attend and meet good people. The sex can come later. Nothing worse than to give a guy pussy then find out later that he’s a total jerk. I avoid that regret by taking my time.  My favorite position is doggie style.  I’m turned on by a lot of touching. Rubbing my back, legs, ass.  And light on, I wanna see too! Lol

Turn offs – mean people suck! Lol  Besides that, I don’t like guys that are pushy.  I’m forward about my sexuality, don’t push me, I’ll just walk away.  And don’t be PRESUMPTUOUS!  I absolutely HATE it when I let a guy know I’m down to do some freaky shit, then he is like, “cool! I’m inviting 5 friends!”  I’ve often said, “Just because I’m freaky, doesn’t mean I’ll freak YOU!”  It is presumptuous for a guy I’ve gotten freaky with to assume that I’ll do any guy or girl he puts in my face. This happens both with guys who know I’m in porn and those who don’t.  This is bad because it is the reason more women can’t be as sexually free as we’d like to be. Too many men don’t know how to react to it, which is why I say RESPECT THE SEX.

7)Now everyone has their boundaries & limits. What are yours?
My boundary is male bisexuality. I’m not against homosexuality, I’m just not interested in dating a guy who does guys. Just not my thing. I do enjoy women, but only bisexual women (total double standard, lol).  I’m only interested in having sex with a woman if she’s part of a couple or if she’s going to have sex with my boyfriend and I.  Solo – it’s just like foreplay to me and after the foreplay, I want some hard dick! Lol  Besides that, I’m into bondage if I’m the mistress. I’m not the sub type J

8) Since this Tha Lounge is a gaming blog, [suppose to be anyway]. Do you playany games? If so what are your favorites?
Oh yeah!  I’m big into MMORPG mostly.  My favorite so far is Never Winter. I really like it. I used to play Dungeon Siege back in the day.
I also like strategy games but haven’t played since I was into Age of Mythology. I used to host video game tournaments in the SF Bay Area. I had Microsoft & Nvidia as sponsors. I still have AOM DVDs, steering wheels from Microsoft and some other game accessories that I didn’t get to give away after the first few tournaments. And I gave away a lot of door prizes and cash for participants and on-lookers.  I’ve never been good at FPS games and I don’t play console games. I have a PS2 and Xbox, but I got so swamped with grad school in 2005, that I haven’t played since then.  My favorite console game was ICO.

9) If you could do a scene w/ anyone who would it be with? Why?
My girl Vanessa Blue or Diana Devoe. They are both good friends and legends.  I think we would have fun and I’d be honored to be in a scene with either of them. They are both now working behind the scenes only though.  I’d be willing to do an off-set scene if they were down, lol. But they don’t really get down like that off set, unfortunately.

10) Do you have any upcoming projects coming up this year?

I’m working on launching an ebony adult magazine called PHAT – Pussy Hips Ass & Tits.  It will be absolutely free to consumers in print or digital copy.  www.freephatmag.com is currently under construction. I’m also incorporating a lot of pages into my main site, www.kaylani4u.com.

11)I’ve noticed that being in the industry requires some marketing skills.  Is it really more than attractive women & cum shots involed in the industry? Well to be successful?

Success in the industry is subjective.  If you think about the millions of porn sites out there, the millions of different female faces and bodies you can see doing porn, success is in the eye of the beholder.  For someone who never worked a regular job, started out stripping, ventured into porn – she’s making $5k a week minimum.  In her mind, whether millions of people know her face or her name or if she never gets featured on a box cover, she’s successful.  The industry is run by men, however, who very much have a pimp mentality. They want the next new booty so the success can be short lived if a girl doesn’t learn how to market herself for her own definition of long term success. When I started, I didn’t want box covers. I wanted to be a needle in a haystack, may 6 figures in 6 months and launch a video gaming facility.

After I got into the industry I learned 2 important things that killed that plan.  #1: $5K+ a week is for white females.  Most Black females, even those networking and putting in effort are lucky to make $2k a week at the top of her game.  That means a girl who knows only to wait for the phone to ring may only make $4k a month. That’s not bad if she knows how to handle money. That $4k is still coming in only 4 days work. That ain’t bad.  Realizing that, I knew I couldn’t make my 6 figures and get in and out as quickly as I had planned.  Second, I learned that most female performers don’t get residuals.  Those who get residuals are “contract girls.”  There haven’t been any black female contract girls in many years.  The financers in the background prefer to keep Black females as dime-a-dozen.  Last year a fabulous director, Tony Flush, went to bat for me because he wanted to shoot me again for one of his videos.  The producer said he’d shot many more than 5 times already and refused to let him hire me for a lead role.  White females, however, are booked over and over and over, that’s how they become household names.  The men running the industry make every effort to keep that opportunity away from Black female performers.  The Black male sexual stereotype also remains in full effect, which means they’ll shoot the same Black men over and over to portray the image of how much Black men fuck and how big their dicks are.

Last – success in any industry requires marketing.  Which is about capital, strategy and branding. Most of the women in this industry are in it for the money and don’t expect to put much work or effort into it. Most of them aren’t going to bother with marketing themselves.

12)Have you seen Zack & Miri make a porno? If so, do you think it was a nice comedic adaptation of the underground industry?
I haven’t seen the movie. I don’t like most of the current comedies that come out. I like scifi, action and psychological thrillers.

13) What are some things you do to pass the time? [not including sexual activites :) ]

Sudoku. going to dancehall reggae clubs. Watching TV – Fringe, BattleStar Gallactica, Numbers, Ghost Whisperer, The Mentalist, CSI Las Vegas, Stargate Atlantis, Naruto, Bleach and the History channel are usually on my Tivo. I also got my motorcycle license November 2008.  I’m looking forward to getting a Kawasaki Ninja 250 this spring and riding!
